Behavioral Science

Behavioral sciences seek to investigate decision making processes, inter-action and communication within and between organisms in a social system. Social Neuroscience by contrast is an interdisciplinary field. It utilizes the complementary insights and approaches of both neuroscience and social science to analyze social and affective aspects of human behavior. As an emerging field it is closely related to affective and cognitive neuroscience, with a common focus on how the brain mediates social interactions.

Widely considered one of the major target areas for the neurosciences in the 21st century, Social Neuroscience investigates biological mechanisms underlying social processes and behavior and applies concepts and methods of biology to further develop theories of social processes and behavior.
Throughout most of the 20th century, social and biological explanations of human behavior were widely viewed as incompatible. However, advances in recent years have led to the development of a new approach synthesized from the social and biological sciences. The new field of Social Neuroscience emphasizes the complementary relationship between the different levels of organization spanning the social and biological domains — i.e. molecule, cell, organ, system, person, interpersonal, social group, societal — and the use of multi-level analyses to foster understanding of the mechanisms underlying the human mind and behavior.

A variety of techniques are used in Social Neuroscience to investigate the confluence of neural and social processes, including functional MRI (fMRI), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Event Related Potentials (ERP), Electrocardiography (EKG), Electromyography (EMG), Galvanic Skin Responses (GSR), as well as clinical studies of patients with focal brain lesions.

Data has been acquired during such normal interactions as, playing music together, during verbal discussions - even “kissing studies” have been performed and captured. During the selected behavioral scenario the physiological data of all subjects is acquired synchronously and stored on the same data file for further analysis.
